Clothing

Late medieval colour palette (Photo: Andreas Petitjean)

On the photo by Andreas Petitjean you can see a selection of the colours in which late medieval clothes may have been dyed. The Middle Ages were very colourful!

There are many half-truths and rumours circulating today about the symbolism and use of colours in earlier times. ‘Only prostitutes wore yellow!’, “Blue and red were reserved for the nobility” and similar generalisations are still sometimes heard even from long-term medieval enthusiasts. But was that really the case? Daniel the dyer, who has been researching and practising dyeing with natural substances for years, knows. In the camp of ‘Siegharcz 1431’ he is also making sure that the mercenaries get a new outfit (or at least the fabric for it). An ideal time to get rid of some half-truths.

Men's clothing ~1431

This is an attempt to depict clothing as it might have been worn by a labourer around 1431. Reproduced in a few pictures and words. Contemporary paintings from Central Europe provide us with references for clothing that we have copied and then reconstructed by various manufacturers. For various reasons, however, we cannot guarantee a faithful reproduction from this period. Regional and fashion differences are recognisable, the will to breed sheep back to get the ideal wool is too small. It is therefore not the last word in wisdom, but we are constantly trying to improve. Reenactment is a process.
